What is an Azure Virtual Machine and what business workloads is it best suited for?

An Azure Virtual Machine (VM) is an on-demand, scalable compute resource in Microsoft’s cloud that runs Windows or Linux operating systems, essentially a server in the cloud that you can provision, configure, and control exactly like an on-premises physical server, without the capital cost and maintenance overhead of owning hardware. Azure VMs are best suited for: lifting-and-shifting existing on-premises server workloads to the cloud without code changes; hosting applications that require specific operating system versions or configurations; running databases (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL) with custom performance tuning not available in managed database services; development and testing environments that can be shut down when not in use to save costs; and line-of-business applications that require Windows Server roles or services. vorza360 provisions and configures Azure VMs to match your workload requirements precisely, right-sized, secured, and optimized from day one.

Azure offers hundreds of VM sizes across specialized series, choosing the wrong one results in either overpaying for capacity you do not use or under-provisioning a workload that degrades under load. vorza360 selects Azure VM sizes by matching the workload’s resource profile to the appropriate series: General Purpose (D-series, B-series) for balanced CPU/memory ratios suitable for web servers, application servers, and development environments; Compute Optimized (F-series) for compute-intensive applications requiring high CPU performance; Memory Optimized (E-series, M-series) for in-memory databases, SAP HANA, and large caches; Storage Optimized (L-series) for big data and high disk throughput workloads; GPU-enabled (NV, NC-series) for machine learning and graphics rendering. We use Azure Advisor and Azure Migrate assessment data to validate our sizing recommendations against real workload metrics before committing to a specific VM series.

A single Azure VM, like a single physical server, is a single point of failure, Azure’s SLA for a single VM is 99.9 percent, which allows for approximately 8.7 hours of downtime per year. For business-critical workloads requiring higher availability, vorza360 implements Azure VM high availability through Availability Sets (which distribute VMs across fault domains and update domains within a data center, providing 99.95 percent SLA for multi-VM deployments), Availability Zones (which distribute VMs across physically separate data center facilities within an Azure region, providing 99.99 percent SLA), or Azure Site Recovery (which replicates VMs to a secondary region for disaster recovery with defined recovery time objectives). We also implement Azure Backup for all production VMs on a policy-driven schedule, providing point-in-time recovery capability for both OS and data disks.

Azure VM security requires both network-level controls and OS-level hardening. vorza360 secures Azure VMs comprehensively: at the network layer, we configure Network Security Groups (NSGs) with rules that restrict inbound traffic to only the specific ports and source IP addresses legitimate for each VM’s role, removing the default allow-all rules that expose VMs to the internet. We enable Azure Defender for Servers (part of Microsoft Defender for Cloud) which provides continuous threat detection, just-in-time VM access (temporarily opening management ports only when needed and only for specific authorized IPs), and adaptive application controls. We disable direct RDP and SSH access from the internet, instead requiring Azure Bastion (a PaaS service providing browser-based secure access without exposing management ports), and we implement Azure Policy to enforce security baselines across all VMs in the subscription.

Azure VM costs are one of the largest line items in most organizations’ cloud bills, and several optimization strategies deliver significant savings without impacting production workloads. vorza360 implements VM cost optimization through: Azure Reserved Virtual Machine Instances for production VMs with predictable, consistent usage, committing to 1 or 3-year terms in exchange for 40 to 72 percent discounts over pay-as-you-go. Azure Hybrid Benefit for organizations with existing Windows Server or SQL Server Software Assurance licenses, allowing those licenses to be applied to Azure VMs for substantial additional savings. Azure Spot VMs for non-critical, interruptible workloads such as batch processing, development environments, and fault-tolerant applications, providing access to unused Azure compute capacity at up to 90 percent discount. Auto-shutdown schedules for all non-production VMs during evenings and weekends, eliminating charges during hours when the resources are idle.
